When Denise Fox learned she had leukaemia in 2026, she went in to her battle with her eyes wide open. She knew the risks, specifically for a woman of her age and background, but, as ever, Denise was one of the strongest women we’d ever met on the Square.

When she was placed in an induced coma to help her breathe, Kim and husband Jack desperately tried to find a stem cell donor, knowing that the statistics were not on her side; indeed, not even Chelsea or Libby could match up with their mum.

And then an old post on an ancestry website (and a quick chat with mum Emerald, and Kim located a half-sibling Denise never knew she had. When Kim and Jack met Darnell, he was nervous, but full of wonder and the new possibilities his new family would provide.

A man of science, a teacher and a charming conversationalist, Darnell may come across as mildly eccentric. And his heart certainly seems to be in the right place…
