Charming, good-looking and full of swagger, Joel Marshall seemed to have everything going for him. Arriving with his dad Ross and stepmother Vicki Fowler, Joel immediately made friends on the Square, first with Tommy Moon and then with Avani Nandra-Hart.

But Joel had a vicious streak. He teased and bullied Barney Mitchell, and it was eventually revealed that he had been responsible for his father’s debts and their exile from Oz. What exactly had Joel done? Had it been blackmail? Theft? Or something worse? As he went on charming the emotionally vulnerable Avani, secretly videotaping her without her consent, it became a question of whether he was simply a teenage boy in need of a morality check — or whether he was doomed to repeat his old mistakes in a new, unsuspecting community.

After an encounter with Vicki left him angry, he beat his step mother black and blue, filming the whole thing – and the Square finally sat up and noticed. Joel was taken into custody and planned to maintain his innocence right the way to court.

In the end, it was Ross’s plea to end Vicki’s suffering that worked on Joel and he changed his plea to guilty, much to Ross and Vicki’s relief.
