Binnie Roberts made a bold entrance into Albert Square in June 1994. As the secret girlfriend of hairdresser Della Alexander, Binnie was out and proud, contrasting sharply with Della’s preference to keep her sexuality under wraps. Binnie had no tolerance for bigotry and was quick to defend her lifestyle choices to anyone who dared judge her. While Della had already established a flirtatious relationship with barman Steve Elliot, Binnie’s arrival shook things up. She urged Della to come out to Steve, but Della found the idea daunting.
The situation came to a head when Steve caught Della and Binnie in bed together. Feeling betrayed, Steve threw Della out, igniting a feud between him and Binnie. Despite their initial animosity, Steve and Binnie eventually managed to put aside their differences. Binnie and Della moved into a bedsit on the Square, and Binnie took a job as a barmaid at the Queen Vic, working alongside Steve. The two constantly bickered, with Steve refusing to accept Della’s sexuality and making advances, leaving Binnie seething with jealousy.
Rumours about Binnie and Della’s relationship started to spread, thanks to Natalie Price. This increased Della’s anxiety about living openly as a lesbian, leading her to deny the rumours. Frustrated by Della’s shame, Binnie threatened to leave. In a dramatic move to convince her to stay, Della kissed Binnie in the middle of Bridge Street. Binnie often pressured Della to come out to her mother and had a knack for bossing her around, causing frequent rows. Despite this, Binnie genuinely cared for Della, and their love for each other was evident.
By 1995, life in Walford had taken its toll on Binnie and Della. They decided to leave for a fresh start in Ibiza. After tying up loose ends and enduring a few more dramatic moments, they departed Albert Square.
