Lloyd Tavernier arrived in Albert Square in July 1990 with his family, including his strict father Celestine, nurturing mother Etta, grandfather Jules, older brother Clyde, and twin sister Hattie. Lloyd’s life wasn’t all fun and games, as he suffered from sickle-cell anaemia. His condition meant his family tended to ‘wrap him up in cotton-wool,’ leaving him feeling smothered and often rebellious against his father’s strict rules.
Determined to assert his independence, Lloyd secretly took a job as a paperboy despite his parents’ fears of over-exertion. This act of defiance didn’t go as planned; he collapsed during a delivery run, resulting in a hospital scare that only heightened his family’s concerns. Feeling increasingly frustrated with his ‘limited existence,’ Lloyd began to rebel more, turning his back on education and getting involved in petty crime. In April 1992, he hijacked a car for a joy-ride, which led to his arrest and a suspended sentence, bringing shame upon his family.
Despite his rebellious streak, Clyde stepped in to help Lloyd get back on track. Clyde’s guidance helped Lloyd straighten out his life, showing the strength of their brotherly bond. Eventually, Lloyd and his parents moved to Norwich for a fresh start.
