Angie Watts, the unforgettable landlady of The Queen Victoria, was born in January 1950. Her life was marked by a series of highs and lows, with her marriage to Den Watts being one of the most tumultuous aspects. Angie first crossed paths with Den during Pete Beale and Pat Harris’s wedding in their teenage years. Their relationship began in February 1968, after Angie’s several other romances. Despite their efforts, the couple couldn’t have children, leading them to foster and eventually adopt Sharon Watts. Angie’s early years were punctuated by Den’s numerous affairs, often leaving her in tears over a glass of gin, with Sharon trying to console her.

The rocky marriage between Angie and Den was a central storyline in Albert Square. They ran the Queen Vic together, doting on their adoptive daughter Sharon, who struggled with her parents’ tumultuous relationship. Despite her glamorous exterior, Angie was deeply unhappy, longing for a stable marriage with Den. However, his continuous infidelity and her excessive drinking painted a grim picture. Their 17th wedding anniversary in 1985 highlighted their broken marriage, with Den’s affair with Jan Hammond adding fuel to the fire. Angie’s misery culminated in a suicide attempt in March 1986, leading to a brief reconciliation with Den, but their relationship remained strained.

In 1987, Angie took on the role of manager at The Dagmar, a rival drinking establishment to The Queen Vic. Her personal life continued to spiral, and a severe health scare led to a hospital stay for renal shutdown. Despite her determination to stay off alcohol, Angie’s relationship with Den was beyond repair. Upon recovery, she proposed a fresh start, even suggesting they remarry, but Den was unconvinced. Angie’s final departure from Walford in 1988 saw her moving to Spain to start anew with her lover, Sonny. Despite her dramatic exit, Angie’s influence on Albert Square remained.

Angie’s story concluded tragically in 2002 when her heavy drinking led to her death from cirrhosis of the liver, with Sharon by her side. Despite her remarriage, Angie requested to be buried next to Den, reuniting them in death. Sharon honoured her by renaming her new club “Angie’s Den,” cementing Angie’s legacy in Albert Square. Angie’s life was a rollercoaster of emotion, marked by moments of strength and resilience that left a lasting impact on the residents of Albert Square and viewers alike.

When Sharon was caught up in the Vic disaster in 2025, she imagined her mother with her; the spirit of Angie kept her girl going until her hero, Grant Mitchell, arrived.
