Jamie Mitchell arrived in Walford with a suitcase full of emotional baggage. After losing his father, Charlie, Jamie was taken in by his godfather, Phil Mitchell, who stepped in to rescue him from the clutches of his abusive uncle, Billy Mitchell. Phil became the father figure Jamie desperately needed, effectively making him his surrogate son. Jamie’s relationship with Billy was rocky, to say the least, especially when Billy started harassing him for money to pay off debts to Steve Owen. This culminated in Jamie defending himself and giving Billy a taste of his own medicine. Eventually, Jamie learned to forgive Billy, marking the beginning of a more positive relationship.

Love was a rollercoaster for Jamie, starting with a humiliating encounter with Janine Butcher, who spread rumours about his prowess in bed after taking his virginity. Jamie’s luck turned when he began a relationship with Sonia Jackson, his first true love. However, their romance hit a snag when Sonia gave birth to Chloe at just 15, and the baby’s father turned out to be Martin Fowler, from a fling before Jamie entered the picture. Chloe’s adoption strained their relationship, but they eventually found their way back to each other, only for Jamie to sleep with Zoe Slater and Janine Butcher later on. Despite the turbulence, Jamie proposed to Sonia with Ethel’s ring, and she accepted.

Jamie and Sonia’s relationship faced further challenges, especially with Sonia’s obsession over Chloe and her desire for another baby, leading to a temporary split. They managed to remain friends, even teaming up to help Lisa get her daughter, Louise, away from Phil. This effort soured when Jamie spilled the beans to Phil, leading to Phil disowning and beating him. Sonia nursed Jamie back to health, and they rekindled their romance, culminating in a second proposal. Suspicion arose when Phil returned with Louise but without Lisa, leading Jamie and Sonia to believe Phil had a hand in Lisa’s disappearance.

In early 2002, Jamie’s loyalties shifted as he sought revenge on Phil by smashing the Queen Vic’s windows, courtesy of Steve Owen’s paycheck. During the final month of his life, Jamie and Sonia sold Ethel’s ring to start a business, only to face financial difficulties retrieving it. Days before his tragic end, Jamie saved Peggy from a mugging, prompting Phil to thank him with the money needed to get the ring back. Jamie’s plans to surprise Sonia were cut short when Martin accidentally ran him over. Jamie’s life ended in the hospital, surrounded by Phil and Billy, who made amends, and Sonia, who stayed by his side until the end.
