Al Jenkins made his mark on Albert Square when he returned to Walford in 2009, having grown up there and known Dot Branning since he was a boy. He took over the doctor’s surgery after living in Ilfracombe, Devon, and quickly became the Square’s new doctor. Al developed close relationships with many residents, particularly Heather Trott, who confided in him about her pregnancy and the baby’s father. His charm and good looks didn’t go unnoticed, especially among the ladies of Walford.

Al became the talk of the town, catching the eye of Tanya Branning after a coffee spill incident. Their brief romance included nights out at The Vic and a dinner date at Fargo’s, but it all ended when Tanya’s ex, Max Branning, got involved. Al’s professional life was equally dramatic. In October 2009, Jean Slater sought his help for her mentally ill daughter, Stacey. Al arranged for Stacey’s sectioning, showing his dedication to his patients.

His personal life was a rollercoaster, too. Al started an on-off relationship with Roxy Slater while still dating Chelsea Fox, but soon realized his true feelings were for Roxy. However, their relationship hit a snag when Roxy inherited a fortune and shifted her focus to running The Vic. Al faced professional consequences as well; in February 2010, he lost his job after a complaint about their relationship violating doctor-patient boundaries.

Ultimately, Al was offered a job in Cornwall and decided to leave Walford. Despite his deepened feelings for Roxy, she declined to join him. Al bid farewell to his favourite patient, Heather Trott, and left Albert Square alone.
