Nicky di Marco arrived in Albert Square in 1998, bringing along her mother Rosa, brothers Beppe and Gianni, and sister Teresa. At first, Nicky’s life in Walford was relatively quiet. She was best friends with Sonia Jackson and had brief romances with Jamie Mitchell, Asif Malik, and Martin Fowler. For a while, it seemed like Nicky would just be another face in the crowded EastEnders scene.

Things took a dramatic turn in 2000 when Nicky’s mother, Rosa, arranged for home maths lessons to help her with exams. Enter Rod Morris, the tutor who would change everything. Nicky fell for Rod and made the first move, which he initially reciprocated. However, things quickly escalated and Rod ended up sexually assaulting Nicky. Devastated, Nicky confided in her family, setting off a chain of explosive events.

Her protective brother Gianni, true to form, attacked Rod, leading to assault charges against him. The charges were dropped when Nicky admitted she hadn’t been entirely truthful about the situation, fearing her family wouldn’t believe she had been molested if they knew she made the first move. Realizing her family doubted her, Nicky decided to leave home. But, not long after, the di Marco family, except for Beppe, left Walford for a new beginning in Leicester in August 2000.
