DCI Charlie Mason was no stranger to the gritty streets of Walford, having been a dedicated police officer since 1976. His first notable appearance was in December 1998, when he mentioned his impressive 22-year tenure in the force. Known for his no-nonsense approach and a knack for being in the right place at the right (or wrong) time, Charlie quickly became a familiar face during some of Albert Square’s most dramatic moments.

Charlie’s detective skills were first put to the test when Ian Beale was shot by hitman John Valecue, hired by Ian’s wife, Cindy. This high-stakes case set the stage for Charlie’s involvement in several other major storylines. On Christmas Day 1998, he was back in action when Tiffany Mitchell fell down the stairs at The Queen Victoria pub. Charlie promptly arrested Grant Mitchell for her attempted murder, adding another layer of tension to the festive season. He continued to play a crucial role in the inquest into Tiffany’s death in January 1999, showcasing his commitment to justice.

In March 1999, Charlie’s investigative prowess was called upon once more with the mysterious disappearance of Saskia Duncan. His efforts culminated in the high-profile trial of Steve Owen and Matthew Rose for Saskia’s murder in October 1999.
