Polly Becker made her dramatic entrance into Albert Square in March 1997, ready to stir up the pot as a journalist for the Walford Gazette. With a nose for news and a knack for making friends, Polly quickly befriended Tony Hills and got him a job shadowing her at the Gazette. The dynamic duo dove into investigating the shady dealings of George and Annie Palmer, uncovering a tangled web of corruption and money laundering. Their sleuthing revealed that George was in cahoots with Councillor Dixon, who was also cheating on his wife with a young man named Jamie. The scandal exploded when Dixon’s wife exposed the affair, leading to Dixon’s tragic suicide.

Polly’s professional life was as turbulent as her personal one. A fling with Tony Hills, unbeknownst to her, added layers of complication since Tony was in a relationship with Simon Raymond. Despite the initial shock, Polly and Tony managed to stay friends. Polly also struck up a friendship with Ruth Fowler, only to betray that trust by prying into Ruth’s life for a juicy story. The resulting article revealed that Sanjay Kapoor was not the biological father of Gita’s new baby, creating a storm of drama in the Square.

The fallout from Polly’s article didn’t sit well with the residents of Albert Square, and she faced the ire of many for her betrayal and sensationalist reporting. However, Polly remained unapologetic, standing by her journalistic integrity. Her relentless pursuit of the story and subsequent departure in September 1998 left a mark on the Square, highlighting the darker side of journalistic ambition.
