Mary Flaherty made quite the entrance in Walford, arriving as the granddaughter of Maggie Flaherty, Pauline Fowler’s long-lost sister. Although she didn’t get along with her father, Conor Flaherty, their trip to Ireland to meet relatives marked the beginning of Mary’s journey. A teenager in trouble, Mary was having an affair with an older married man, Gerry McCrae. However, she found a good friend in her cousin, Mark Fowler, and decided to move to Walford, where their relationship grew stronger over time.
Initially, Pauline Fowler was quite fond of Mary, often commenting on how she reminded her of a young version of herself. However, living together proved challenging, and Mary frequently had to find new accommodation. She also caused a stir by coming between Joe Wicks and Sarah Hills, only to be heartbroken when Joe returned to Sarah after their one-night stand.
Mary’s life in Walford was anything but dull. She broke her pelvis while on holiday in Norfolk, which didn’t stop her from getting involved with Matthew Rose and Robbie Jackson. Her relationships and the drama they brought added to the rich tapestry of life in Albert Square. Eventually, Mary’s time in Walford came to an end when she left with her father, Conor, and his pregnant lover, Ruth Fowler. They moved to Scotland, marking the end of her eventful stint in the Square.
