Christine Hewitt first popped up in Albert Square in February 1992 as a client of Arthur Fowler, who was moonlighting as a gardener. Arthur got quite the shock when Christine arrived looking for a gardening job—not for herself, but for her son Jonathan. Unfortunately, Jonathan turned out to be more interested in napping than gardening, prompting Christine to step in and take his place. Her dedication quickly made her a regular fixture around the Square.

With Pauline off in New Zealand tending to her brother, Christine’s frequent visits to Arthur raised more than a few eyebrows. While Arthur seemed oblivious, Pauline’s brother Pete Beale was more perceptive, though Christine soon charmed him into taking her out. Things came to a head in August when Christine made a pass at Arthur. Although he turned her down initially, her heartfelt letter and photo softened his resolve. A visit to her house ended with Arthur admitting his feelings but reaffirming his commitment to Pauline, marking an emotional goodbye.

However, Pauline’s return brought gossip and revelations. Dot Cotton and others filled her in on Christine’s presence, but it was discovering the letter and photo that truly enraged Pauline. Confronting Christine, Pauline found a lonely woman drowning her sorrows in afternoon drinks. Despite Christine’s pleas, Pauline’s rage simmered. Arthur couldn’t resist one last rendezvous, rekindling Christine’s hopes. Their affair reignited, with Christine growing increasingly needy and manipulative, even staging a fake burglary to lure Arthur.

By 1993, the affair reached its breaking point. Christine’s erratic behaviour and demands that Arthur choose between her and Pauline wore him down. His confession to Pauline about the affair resulted in a furious confrontation and a frying pan to the head. Pauline threw him out, and Arthur ended things with Christine for good. Left facing a lonely future, Christine disappeared from the Square in October, divorced by her husband Greg and abandoned by Arthur.
