Rod Norman, first seen in Albert Square in July 1987, quickly made an impression with his scruffy appearance and punk style. Despite looking like a greasy layabout, Rod had a heart of gold and a knack for helping those in need. He immediately took Mary Smith under his wing, seeing her through some tough times. Arrested for solicitation, losing her baby to social services, and battling a drug habit, Mary needed someone like Rod. He moved in with her, helped her get a job at The Dagmar, and was instrumental in reuniting her with her daughter, Annie, despite the initial resistance from Mary’s parents in Stockport.

Their relationship, though, was constantly tested by Mary’s hot-headed and selfish nature. Things came to a head in March 1988 when Rod forgot to pick up Annie from play-group, leading to a public humiliation by Mary and Rod being thrown out. Disappearing for a while, Rod returned only to squat in an abandoned flat rather than move back in with Mary. As Mary spiralled back into drug use, Rod tried to help but eventually gave up, leading to Mary’s departure from Walford in May 1988.

Rod stayed behind, working as a bookkeeper for Mary’s father and taking over a market stall. His principles were challenged when The Firm, a criminal organization, coerced him into implicating Den Watts in the arson of The Dagmar. This led to Den’s arrest and imprisonment. Around this time, Rod grew close to Donna Ludlow, another troubled soul. Despite his best efforts to help her kick her heroin habit, Donna’s downward spiral ended in her tragic death by overdose in 1989.

Rod then lodged with Dot Cotton and became involved with Hazel, the girlfriend of Dot’s son, Nick Cotton. Hazel’s deception about her baby being Nick’s and her subsequent near-death beating by Nick led to a brief relationship with Rod. However, their romance ended when Hazel chose to travel, and Rod wasn’t ready. He said goodbye to her in February 1990 and decided to leave Walford himself, booking a flight to travel around India.
