Nathan Williams shook things up in Albert Square when he made his debut in 2001. The illegitimate son of Roy Evans, Nathan’s existence was a bombshell dropped by his terminally ill mother, Jane Williams, who revealed his true parentage to Roy. Initially, Nathan wanted nothing to do with Roy’s attempts to bond. However, after Jane’s death, which coincided with the birth of Roy’s grandson Jack, Nathan found himself penniless and reluctantly turned to Roy for help. He soon moved in with the Evans family, much to the dismay of Roy’s other son, Barry. The resentment was mutual, with Nathan disliking Barry for having the upbringing and father he never had.
Nathan didn’t waste time integrating into life in Walford, growing closer to Roy and even having a brief fling with Melanie Owen. He started working at the car lot with Roy, while Barry played house-husband to look after his son, Jack. Barry’s jealousy only grew as Nathan appeared to be the perfect son Roy never had. This sibling rivalry escalated, with Barry often ending up looking foolish in their exchanges.
Determined to usurp Barry’s place in Roy’s affections, Nathan concocted a scheme to frame Barry and woo his wife, Natalie. Although his initial advances led to a kiss, Natalie firmly put an end to it, refusing to let things go further. Undeterred, Nathan pressed on with his plan, exploiting Barry’s history of financial blunders. He stole money from the car lot and set Barry up to take the fall. The plan seemed fool proof until Natalie pieced together the truth and exposed Nathan’s deceit.
With his true nature revealed, Roy decided he wanted nothing more to do with Nathan, leading to his banishment from Albert Square.
