Tony Carpenter, a Trinidadian handyman, and builder, brought a mix of charm and toughness to Albert Square when he settled there as a young man. Born in 1945 in Trinidad, Tony moved to London and set up his life in Walford. He married Hannah Carpenter, and together they had two children, Kelvin in 1969 and Cassie in 1975. Tony lived at No 3 Albert Square, where he converted the house into flats, selling them off one by one as they were finished.

Tony was known for his good nature but wasn’t afraid to show his tough side when needed. This was especially evident when he beat up Nick Cotton for making racial remarks against him and his family. By 1985, Tony was in the midst of a divorce from Hannah, who lived separately with the kids. Things got even more dramatic in 1986 when Hannah showed up with her new lover, Neville Agard. Tony took matters into his own hands when he discovered Neville had hit Cassie, confronting him and, eventually, Hannah and Cassie moved back in with Tony. However, their reconciliation was short-lived, and they soon realized their marriage was over, leading Hannah and Cassie to leave Walford.

Tony, tired of the constant drama and longing for a change, decided to return to Trinidad in May 1987, leaving his son Kelvin to live in the last remaining flat.
