Liz Turner arrived in Walford in 2006 from her home in Spain for the trial of her son Owen, who was arrested for assaulting Denise Fox. Despite Owen receiving a suspended sentence, Liz tried to take him to Cardiff to live with her sister. However, things took a dark turn when Owen, needing an alcoholic drink, returned drunk and knocked Liz unconscious. When she woke, she discovered that Owen had kidnapped his daughter, Libby, and attempted to kill both her and himself. Liz’s attempt to visit Libby in the hospital was thwarted by Denise, and she soon returned to Spain, leaving behind a whirlwind of chaos.
Three years later, Liz reappeared for Libby’s 18th birthday, revealing that Owen wanted a visit from his daughter in prison. This visit caused tension with Denise, and despite Liz’s efforts to apologize, Denise refused to forgive her. Liz’s attempt to bond with Libby was also cut short as Libby decided to support her mother’s wishes. An emotional goodbye followed, and Liz moved back to Spain after visiting Owen one last time. However, she soon returned to Walford, becoming Dot Branning’s lodger and taking up work on Ian Beale’s fruit and veg stall. She also began a budding romance with Patrick Trueman.
Owen’s release from prison brought more trouble, as he defied his license conditions to see Liz. His vendetta against Denise’s fiancé, Lucas Johnson, led to his re-arrest and eventual murder by Lucas, who framed it as Owen leaving town. Liz was left distraught and guilt-ridden, believing she had pushed Owen away. Her suspicions about Owen’s disappearance grew when she received flowers in his name but noticed they were lilies instead of his usual daffodils. Determined to find Owen, Liz eventually discovered his murder and watched as Lucas was arrested for the crime.
Liz decided to return to Spain after Owen’s funeral, with Chelsea asking to join her for a fresh start. Denise insisted that Libby also take a holiday with them. Liz said her emotional goodbyes to Dot and Patrick, revealing she wouldn’t return to England and feeling the weight of missed chances. As she left Walford in a taxi with Libby and Chelsea, Liz turned the page on a turbulent chapter in her life, hoping for peace and a new beginning.
