Hannah Carpenter first appeared in Walford in June 1985, popping in occasionally to discuss their children with her estranged husband, Tony. Hannah had a habit of looking down on Tony’s lifestyle and career, so their meetings were rarely pleasant. Their dynamic took a dramatic turn when Hannah met the suave corporate lawyer, Neville Agard, and invited him to move in with her. Plans for marriage were soon underway, but the fairytale quickly turned into a nightmare when Hannah discovered Neville’s violent temper. He had beaten her daughter, Cassie, with a riding whip, prompting Hannah to flee. She turned up at Tony’s doorstep in April 1986, and after a bloody confrontation with Neville, moved in with Tony to give their marriage another go.

Unfortunately, their reconciliation was far from smooth. Hannah soon returned to her nagging ways, unhappy with the state of their home and constantly pushing Tony to do better. She also managed to upset her children, trying to end her son’s relationship with Carmel Roberts and sending Cassie to boarding school. Hannah’s dissatisfaction with life in Walford only grew in 1987 after being accosted by both Rezaul Gabir and Mehmet Osman and stalked by the Walford attacker. Though shaken, she was unharmed. Believing Mehmet was the attacker due to a previous pass he made at her, Hannah relayed her fears to Tony, who, along with Den Watts and Pete Beale, went to confront Mehmet. Discovering Tony had attacked Mehmet, Hannah took the moral high ground and denounced his actions, despite previously condoning violence against Neville.

Realizing their marriage was beyond repair, Hannah decided to leave Walford in February 1987 and move in with her sister in another part of London.
