Debbie Bates made her first appearance in Walford in May 1993, introduced as a friend of Tracey. It didn’t take long for her to become a love interest for Nigel Bates, whom she met at his birthday party. Debbie and her daughter Clare Tyler moved nearby to escape Debbie’s abusive husband, Liam Tyler. Despite Liam’s attempts to break them up, Nigel and Debbie’s relationship blossomed, and eventually, Debbie and Clare moved in with Nigel.

By July 1994, Nigel and Debbie had tied the knot and were happily married. Debbie started working at the local bookmakers, but her boss, Stan Dougan, constantly flirted with her, much to her displeasure. Keeping this a secret from Nigel, she eventually quit her job after rejecting Stan’s advances. When Nigel found out Stan had been harassing Debbie, he gave Stan a well-deserved punch.

However, their happiness was short-lived. In June 1995, Debbie was tragically killed in a hit-and-run accident. The police informed Nigel that Debbie had walked out into the road and was hit by a car, killing her instantly. Her sudden death left Nigel and Clare devastated. Nigel later adopted Clare after Liam’s failed attempt to gain custody.
