Cassie Carpenter made her first appearance in Albert Square in November 1985, visiting her father. She adored her dad, Tony, and found her parents’ separation particularly tough, especially since she didn’t get along with Neville, her mom’s new partner. In April 1986, things took a darker turn when Cassie and her mother, Hannah, arrived on Tony’s doorstep with the distressing news that Neville had been beating Cassie with a riding whip. After a showdown with Neville, both Hannah and Cassie moved in with Tony and Kelvin in Walford. Cassie was over the moon when her parents decided to give their marriage another shot.

Cassie was a bright but mischievous youngster, much like her brother. In May 1986, she got into trouble at school for bullying another girl and landed in even more hot water with her parents for trying to hide it. The situation escalated when Tony caught her smoking cannabis she had swiped from Owen Hughes, a friend of Mark Fowler. Furious, the Carpenters decided to cut ties with the Fowlers. After a meeting with Cassie’s headmaster, Hannah concluded that boarding school was the best option for her. Although Cassie protested, she was sent away in September 1986.

Just a few weeks later, the Carpenters were alarmed to hear that Cassie had run away from school and was nowhere to be found. She was discovered the next day, stealing food from Michelle Fowler and Lofty Holloway’s kitchen in Albert Square. She was promptly returned to school, much to everyone’s relief. Cassie’s appearances became infrequent after that. She did return to play a Herald Angel in the Walford Nativity play on Christmas Eve 1986 and joined Kelvin and his friends for charades the next day.

After her parents’ attempt at reconciliation failed, Hannah left Walford, taking Cassie with her.
