Mercy Chubb, the ever-compassionate and sometimes chaotic character, had quite the journey in Walford. Her story began in the spin-off series E20, where she was trying to create a project for the local church with youth minister Benjamin. With her grandmother promising to fund her university place if the project succeeded, Mercy enlisted her friend Fatboy’s help. Unfortunately, his wild ideas left them humiliated. Things took a dramatic turn when Mercy discovered she was pregnant with Benjamin’s child, leading to a heart-breaking miscarriage. Despite the turmoil, Fatboy was always there to support her, proving their bond was unbreakable.
After a brief stint in Nigeria, Mercy returned to Walford, reuniting with Fatboy at a party in Hampshire. Their joy was short-lived as they had to escape a brawl, but it was clear their connection was as strong as ever. Mercy’s grandmother Grace revealed plans to return to Lagos, but neither Mercy nor Grace truly wanted to leave. With Fatboy’s help, they realised their hearts belonged in London, and they moved into a property on Albert Square.
Life in Walford was never dull for Mercy. After an argument with Fatboy led to the accidental destruction of a memorial tree, they discovered the body of Owen Turner buried beneath it. This shocking discovery haunted Mercy, but she found solace in Fatboy’s unwavering support. Their antics continued, from breaking Dot Branning’s window during a game of rounders to serving drinks at Alfie Moon’s secret drinking den. Despite the chaos, Mercy’s kind heart always shone through, even when she had to deal with the fallout of her friends’ departures.
Mercy’s love life was equally tumultuous. At a New Year’s Eve party, she kissed Fatboy to deter Kim Fox’s advances, only to push Kim off the bar in a fit of jealousy. Her relationship with Seb Parker ended abruptly when she faced deportation due to an expired visa. In a desperate bid to stay in the UK, Fatboy proposed, and they married, though Mercy confided in Lauren Branning that it was a sham. Despite the marriage allowing her to stay, Mercy felt guilty and decided to return to Nigeria. Fatboy’s heartfelt attempt to stop her led to an emotional farewell, marking the end of their rollercoaster romance.
Mercy’s departure left a void in Walford, but her impact on those she left behind was undeniable. Her younger sister Faith later arrived to inform Fatboy that Mercy had annulled their marriage, closing the chapter on Mercy’s dramatic and heartfelt story.
