Dexter Hartman burst onto the scene in Albert Square in 2013, bringing with him a whirlwind of drama and charm. He arrived after finding a photograph and address for his mother, Ava’s family, who she had recently reunited with. Dexter quickly made friends with his cousin, Abi Branning, and was soon invited to a family dinner. However, the dinner took a turn when Ava arrived to take him home, revealing Dexter’s true identity. Abi was furious, and Ava wasn’t too pleased either. But Dexter, ever the smooth talker, managed to navigate the family drama with a smile.

Dexter’s time in Walford was anything but boring. He became fast friends with Jay Brown and even landed a job at Phil Mitchell’s garage. His friendship with Lola Pearce, however, was a bit more complicated. Shocked to discover she was a mother, Dexter’s reaction wasn’t the best, but they remained friends. Phil, ever the protective grandfather, wasn’t thrilled about their friendship and told Lola to keep her distance. Dexter’s past as a gang member came to light when Bianca Butcher sought advice for her son, Liam. This revelation led to their home being trashed by the gang, prompting Ava and Dexter to move to Walford permanently.

The arrival of Dexter’s father, Sam James, added another layer of complexity to his life. Initially hiding his true identity, Sam’s presence caused tension between Dexter and Ava. Despite the rocky start, Dexter warmed up to his father, especially after discovering Sam needed a kidney transplant. Dexter’s decision to donate his kidney led to a brief reconciliation, but when Ava discovered Sam’s true motives, she ended their relationship. Dexter, unaware of the full story, blamed Ava for Sam’s departure and moved in with Cora Cross. His time with Cora was tumultuous, marked by heavy drinking and a failed attempt to kiss Lola, who was now with Peter Beale.

Dexter’s love life took another hit when he clashed with Nancy Carter. Their relationship was a rollercoaster, filled with punches and misunderstandings. Despite the rocky start, Dexter realised he had feelings for Nancy and eventually kissed her. Their relationship faced challenges, especially when Dexter left to stay with Ava over Christmas. Realising things weren’t working out, Dexter gave Nancy some heartfelt advice before leaving for Newcastle. His departure marked the end of an era, but Dexter’s impact on Walford was undeniable.

In 2019, Lola returned to Albert Square, revealing that she and Dexter had split up.
