Dr. Harold Legg, the venerable GP of Albert Square, was a trusted figure in the community. As Walford’s original doctor, Dr. Legg was always on hand to offer medical advice, a comforting word, or a stern lecture when needed. His practice, established in 1947, became a cornerstone of the Square, and his dedication to his patients was unwavering. Whether it was treating Dot Cotton’s hypochondria or helping Sue Osman cope with the loss of her son, Dr. Legg’s presence was a reassuring constant in the often tumultuous lives of Walford’s residents.

Born into a Jewish family in the East End of London, Harold’s early life was marked by the upheaval of the 1930s, including the infamous Battle of Cable Street. His medical career began during World War II, where he met his beloved wife, Judith, a nurse who tragically died during an air raid. This loss profoundly affected Harold, who never remarried and instead devoted his life to his medical practice and the well-being of his community.

Dr. Legg was a confidant and a friend to many. His close relationships with people like Ethel Skinner and Lou Beale highlighted his compassion. Despite his serious demeanour, Dr. Legg had a dry wit that often surfaced in his interactions, particularly with Dot.

Dr. Legg’s later years saw him facing his own health challenges and he found himself battling pancreatic cancer. His return to Walford during this period was marked by touching reunions and reflections on his long life. His final scenes, shared with Dot, were a fitting tribute to his enduring legacy. Even in his last moments, Dr. Legg’s wisdom and gentle humour shone through, leaving an ever-lasting impact on the Square.
