When William Congreve first coined the phrase ‘Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned” in his 1697 play The Mourning Bride, he must have had Chrissie Watts in mind! She certainly epitomises the phrase in every way that counts!
Conned by her scheming husband, Den Watts, Chrissie arrived in Walford to get what was due to her. But she was manipulated by Den’s roguish charms and forgive every trespass he made against her. When he had an affair with Kate Mitchell, Chrissie improved her rivals locks with a right shearing! She at least bonded with step-daughter Sharon, who had also been let down by Den multitudes of times.
But Den pushed Chrissie too far. One could argue, he made her insane. His constant lies (conning Sam out of the Vic, getting Zoe Slater pregnant) had had major consequences (the Mitchells were broke, Zoe was heartbroken) and Chrissie had had enough. She assembled her coven and together they confronted Den. He was dead by Chrissie’s hands by the end of it and, after months of conniving to run away with true love Jake Moon, Chrissie was caught out and destined to spend the rest of her naturals behind bars.
20 years later, top dog in every room she walked into, Chrissie had an unexpected surprise when she found Sharon as one of her cellmates! It was a frosty reception, but, after being truly honest with each other, they both accepted that the past was the past: lying to Sharon was Chrissie’s one, true regret. That and getting caught of course.
Chrissie got paroled, and was last seen driving away from Albert Square with Jake, the smell of freedom in the air and a new start before her. Time will tell if she’s successful…
