Bernadette Taylor may have come from humble beginnings, but they had stood her in good stead: she knew what it was like to struggle and survive and, as a result, had become a hard worker with a fierce moral code, quick to help when she was needed.

But she had also been through a lot. She had arrived with a family who eventually left her behind. She had suffered a teenage miscarriage, wrestled with her sexuality, and had just been told that her brother had been murdered — by a group of women she likely respected and looked up to, one of whom had been her boss.

Still, we had seen a survivor in Bernie – she had held her own in defence of what was hers. And now that she knew the truth, she was determined for justice.

Stealing an immense amount of money from the Panesar family, after Nish had left her in control of the fortune, Bernie took the loot and left the Square with cousin Felix, hoping to put the tragedy of Keanu behind her.
