INTRODUCTION
Justin Bieber said ‘Sorry’, Inside Out give emotions a voice, Princess Charlotte arrived, Caitlyn Jenner appeared in Vogue and Star Wars was back on the big screen with a new generation of heroes.
In the Square, EastEnders turned 30 and pulled out all the stops for it’s anniversary celebrations. Live inserts were placed in episodes, one episode went completely live, and one would not only flashback to the events of Easter 2014, but also bring back a host of characters as well! Major Walford stalwarts like Peggy Mitchell, Tanya Cross and Christian Clarke turned up on the Square, some for a wedding, one for a mystery that needed solving.
The events and the murder of Lucy Beale had set in motion a revelation that would change everything, forever! The killer would be revealed and Ian would be greeted with an unlikely saviour in his hour of need: his mum, Kathy…
EVENTS
The Killer Revealed!
The week of the anniversary was finally upon us and by the end of a bumper week full of surprises we would know the killer – even though the murderer wouldn’t know they were the killer themselves!

The week began with a mystery: Phil returned to Albert Square with his mind on a mission and with Peggy alongside to make sure he made the right decisions. Whatever he needed, Peggy and Billy were telling him to leave it, but he was adamant and left Peggy to wander around her old haunts for a bit. Mick even told her to get “outta my pub!”

On the other side of the Square, wedding prep was full speed ahead: Ian and Jane were getting remarried after all the grief of the past year and numerous surprises turned up to help them celebrate! Christian arrived with the relieving news that mum Linda couldn’t make it. Tanya also showed up, determined to avoid ex-husband Max. Lauren, who had figured out who killed Lucy from policewoman Emma’s notes, proved herself cleverer than any copper to ever grace our screens. Abi thought it was Max. Max accused Abi. Tanya couldn’t handle any of it and was glad to leave!

Phil, in the meantime had gone to a wasteland in London where we had a shock when a cab pulled up… but more on that later…

As the wedding reception began, Ian, working out that Lucy had been killed at home, started eliminating the suspects and phoned the killer, telling them to meet him in the Beale home. When he got there, Jane came down the stairs, and began her story…

Flashback to Good Friday – The Night Lucy Beale Died
Lucy had gone to one of her properties to meet a client and after being mugged on the way (by Ben and Jay Mitchell of all people), she ended up back on the Square. She helped a drunk Jake out of a cab. She had arguments with Abi about Max and with Max about their relationship. She even had a run in with Denise, who had planned to leave Ian. This argument was overheard by brother Bobby.
Jane received a call from Bobby shortly afterward and returned home to find Lucy dead on the floor, and Bobby holding the jewellery box that had caved her head in. After sending Bobby to one side, Jane removed the evidence and took Lucy to the common. Bobby had no idea his sister was dead at his hands and was as stunned as everyone else the next day when the body was found!

Ian was horrified, but he loved his son more. The whole family agreed to keep it quiet and never tell Bobby – as if it was going to stay hidden forever! Peter and Lauren couldn’t stick with this plan though and left for New Zealand, excitingly expected their first child together.

As for the police, they started taking their time more, not really having a clue now that the Beales were covering everything up. But someone had to go down and in the end, the evidence put Max Branning firmly in the frame. In the October, Max was arrested in full view of the Square… Who could prove his innocence now? Or would Max stay in prison for a murder he didn’t commit?

Dot and Nick: The Final Chapter
It would be a thoroughly rotten year for Dot, Charlie and Nick Cotton. The year began with Nick in hiding in the burnt out house next door and with Dot his only confidant. Ill, he begged his ma to get his gear for him to shoot up, which she did. During a chat about the past, Nick admitted to Dot that he had attacked and killed Reg Cox in the burnt out house they were sitting in. This was too much for Dot who left Nick as he overdosed and he died within minutes. Dot phoned the police and admitted to the murder of Nicholas Cotton.

Okay, she had only left him to die. And normally, one wouldn’t have blamed her, but nevertheless, the law is the law, and Dot spent some time inside. At the same time, Charlie and Ronnie had been in a car accident (Nick cut the brakes on the car, his favourite trick) and Ronnie had been comatose for a while. Struggling, Charlie had fallen for Roxy, as those sisters shared everything remember, and Ronnie was not thrilled when she revealed that she knew! Soon she was also messing about with Vincent, but sensibly pulled the plug on that in time to make an enemy of him and mother Claudette. By the end of the year Charlie Cotton was gone, Dot was in prison and worst of all, Jim Branning, family patriarch, passed away whilst in care. It was a sad day in Walford.

The Carters: Picking Up the Pieces
Sides were drawn within the Carter ranks and things were getting serious. With Dean’s assault on Linda, Mick lashed out, kicking his ‘brother’ out, and Shirley for good measure. In fact, Shirley and Mick spent most of the year ignoring each other, until Stan revealed he had terminal cancer and had simply wanted to die surrounded by family. With Dean inside for suspicion of assault, Shirley and partner Buster, Dean and Mick’s father who had arrived at Christmas, set up in the B and B and made tentative steps in her son’s direction.

Of course, there is such a thing as too much family: Stan’s ex-wife Sylvie (and Shirley and Tina’s mum) was back on the scene, living with sister Babe, suffering from Alzheimer’s and not in the best of ways. This threw the Carters for a loop, especially when Stan started seeing Cora Cross, which put Sylvie’s stuck-in-the-past nose out of joint. Eventually, Shirley would make amends with Mick while scattering Stan’s ashes and they would start to bond, but there was a long way to go.

Tina at least had a decent year – free from Tosh, she discovered a new thirst for life and threw herself into everything she did with enthusiasm. Especially her love life. She fell for Sonia, who separated from Martin by now returned the feelings.
There was some happiness this year though as Mick proposed to Linda. By Christmas, they were getting ready for the January do, but Dean was lurking in the shadows, waiting for his moment.

The ‘Resurrection’ of Kathy Beale!
Now where were we? Oh yes! Phil, in the meantime had gone to a wasteland in London where we had a shock when a cab pulled up…

…and out emerged the long-dead Kathy Beale! It’s turns out that her death had been faked, the plan of husband Gavin Sullivan, who had owed some dangerous people money. Kathy had objected to the plan, but Gavin was a manipulative, abusive bully who made Kathy shake in fear. She had reached out to Phil for help, cash and wanted to come home to her sons.

Phil was adamant that she should stay away, and tried to keep Kathy’s survival a secret from everyone else. But unfortunately Sharon, convinced Phil was having an affair, found Kath hidden in the Arches waiting one day for yet more cash from Phil. Sharon was fuming, but there was more to the situation than she knew.

Ian, who had suffered enough by now, contemplated suicide and genuinely thought he had succeeded when he woke to find his mum at his side! Ben took it even worse, rejecting the mum he barely remembered and blaming her for leaving him with Phil. It took him a while, but when Gavin started threatening the Mitchells by extension, he calmed down. Even the police let it go due to Gavin’s psychotic behaviour.

Phil got a bit too boorish in his dealings with Gavin and was kidnapped for his trouble. When he did return home, he was in full blown alcohol mode and couldn’t help anyone, let alone himself. There was worse to come when Gavin came back for Kathy and threatened not just her but Ben if she didn’t flee with him. Sharon caught them unexpectedly and was floored, as were we, when Gavin asked after Sharon’s parents Den and Angie – and revealed he was her natural father and he had arranged for Den to adopt her! Sharon was stunned into complete silence as he whispered the immortal words ‘Hello Princess’ at her!

Gavin was caught out in the end (after nearly blowing the Mitchells to smithereens on Bonfire Night) and Sharon ejected him from her and Denny’s life. Or so she said… Gavin wouldn’t go far. He had connections to other Square newcomers…
Vincent Hubbard
Vincent Hubbard’s entrance in the Square was one of discovery – he was looking for old flame Ronnie Mitchell. He found his estranged wife – none other than Kim Fox, who had returned to the Square scared of the man she had married and heavily pregnant. Vincent turned up in time for the birth of baby Pearl, and, while he may have been dodgier than a politician on Question Time, he was not a threat to Kim and his daughter, who he tiredly tried to make amends with. He succeeded, even making friends with Patrick Trueman, Kim’s surrogate Pops.

But with her husband came a mother-in-law from Hell. Claudette Hubbard, known in the area as a) a decent foster carer and b) a bit of a gangster’s moll, was a dragon from the old days of Walford and what she wanted she got. When it was her vs Kim, she always won. Nothing Kim did was good enough for this mum. But Claudette also had a dodgy past – Vincent’s father Henry had been a lowly thug in a feud with Eric Mitchell, Phil’s dad. She had lied and told Vincent that his father had died at Mitchell’s hands and he took up against Phil and Ronnie in a feud that would have deadly consequences.

At Christmas Ronnie arranged for Vincent to be driving a car that would be stopped. He would be placed in the boot and the car would be crushed – Ronnie’s new hobby. Claudette caught on though, and although Ronnie would never know who died, Vincent’s place was taken by Fatboy, who Vincent found in the crushed car afterwards. He lied to Dot, saying Arthur had gone away, and drew a line under the feud with the Mitchells. Vincent would learn he had bigger fish to fry – and the cause of his rage was much, much closer to home…

Stacey and Martin, Shabnam and Kush
Who would have thought that Martin Fowler, cool and dependable, would grow into a man who more resembled his brother Mark than father Arthur? He came back to the Square to aid wife Sonia and daughter Rebecca, aka Bex, but he and Sonia’s marriage had had issues for a long time and the pair separated, much to Bex’s annoyance. Sonia entered into a relationship with Tina, while Martin ended up dating Stacey Slater. They got on surprisingly well, and even though they had their up and downs, they actually worked as a couple. By the end of the year, Stacey was pregnant.

On the opposite side of the Square, Shabnam Masood and Kush Kazemi were buttering each other up nicely and were bonding to the point of marriage. The wedding was a lovely affair, made lovelier by the loud colours and decorations provided by Kush’s mum Carmel! Unfortunately, happiness turned to sorrow when Shabnam lost the baby she was carrying and the pair almost split. They managed to reconcile, but there was another surprise: Shabnam had given birth to a baby years before and abandoned the baby! Now, Jade needed a home… and Shabnam was unwilling. But Jade’s father wasn’t and a custody battle between Shabnam and the baby’s father, Dean Wicks, was imminent.

Stacey gave birth to Arthur in the middle of the Nativity play in the Community Centre Christmas time. This would unfortunately not aid Stacey’s declining mental health. She was convinced she was being stalked (it turned out to be her brother Kyle) and was hiding the biggest secret from Martin – he was not the father of baby Arthur… his best friend Kush was…

The Other Stuff
Kat and Alfie win a fortune on a scratch card, pack up and move to Spain. Kat returns at Christmas, swiftly followed by Alfie and the kids. Something is clearly not right with them… Lola takes Lexi and leaves the Square. Carol leaves to see the world on a motorbike and Lauren returns briefly – giving birth to baby Louie – before returning to New Zealand. Liam and Cindy leave to join Ricky in Germany. Paul Coker arrives to live with his grandparents and catches Ben’s eye, but’s he seeing Abi Branning…
